CIAA Conference Play is Full Swing

CIAA conference play is well underway as each team sets its sights on the 2016 Women's Basketball Championship title.

This season highlights several intriguing story lines to be played out over the course of seven weeks and before the championship tournament.  Reigning Champion Virginia State is off to a steady start and has the foundation to sweep the conference once again; however eleven-time champion Shaw University is ready to return to the winner's circle.  The Virginia Union women are under the new leadership of first-year head coach Annmarie Gilbert and are ranked No. 20 in USA Today's Division II Coaches Poll.  Meanwhile, Lincoln (Pa.) University and Livingstone College are ready to finish what they started in the 2015 season.  Who will have what it takes to go all the way?

GAMES TO WATCH

Thursday, January 7 - Shaw University at Virginia Union University (5:30 p.m.)

The Shaw University Lady Bears travel to take on the Virginia Union Panthers on Thursday, January 7, 2016.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. EST at Barco-Stevens Hall.

The Shaw University women's basketball team looks to return to the top of the CIAA conference this year after previously achieving nine championship titles in fifteen seasons (2014 CIAA Champions).  On a 2-0 streak in conference play (10-4 overall), the Bears will have their work cut out for them as they face-off against the No. 20 Virginia Union team, as ranked by USA Today's Division II Coaches Poll (December 15, 2015).  The Panthers hold a 0-1 record in conference play (8-1 overall) after losing their first game in a CIAA overtime battle against Johnson C. Smith University, 77-75.

Key players to watch in Thursday's matchup include Virginia Union's Kiana Johnson and Shaw senior Eboni Ross.  Johnson leads the conference in points per game (24.8), steals per game (4.2), and assists per game (8.2).  Ross currently ranks 2nd in rebounds per game (10.9) and 8th in points per game (14.6).  Both have received CIAA weekly honors including Player of the Week (Johnson) and Newcomer of the Week (Ross).

Shaw and Virginia Union last met during 2015 regular season play when the Bears held out for a 77-70 home victory.

Saturday, January 9 - Livingstone College at Virginia State University (2:00 p.m.)

Defending CIAA Champions Virginia State University host Livingstone College this Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. EST in Daniel Gymnasium.

This weekend, two of last season's top performing teams will face-off for what may be a neck-and-neck battle.  Livingstone currently holds a 6-4 overall record while sitting 1-0 in the conference after a 68-57 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) University.  The Virginia State women are split (1-1) in conference play (5-6 overall) with a 75-48 victory over St. Augustine's University and after falling 65-49 to Johnson C. Smith University.  Home court advantage favors VSU (4-1), while Livingstone is struggling 0-3 in road matchups.

Livingstone's Amber Curtis dominates the court, averaging 20 points per contest, and rebounds (7.9 per game).  Her performance ranks her second in the conference in points per game.  For the Lady Trojans, senior Wynterra Pittman holds a team-high average of 12.8 ppg and adds 9.4 rebounds per game.

Virginia State and Livingstone last met in the 2015 regular season when the Lady Trojans fell 77-68 to the Blue Bears.
