The North Performing at Full-Force

In Week #8 of CIAA women’s basketball competition, several teams forged ahead without loss for a domination of the Northern Division.  Chowan University and the No. 21 Virginia Union women both swept the week’s competition with 3-0 records while defending CIAA Champions Virginia State went 2-0.  The Chowan Hawks sit atop the division with a 4-1 CIAA record, 10-5 overall.  VUU and VSU both follow closely behind at 3-1 in CIAA conference play, 11-1 and 7-6 overall, respectively.  Lincoln University advanced their conference record to 3-3 by going 2-1 during the week.  This performance, including victories over Fayetteville State and St. Augustine’s, earned Head Coach Darrell Mosley CIAA Coach of the Week Honors.

Meanwhile, the Shaw University Lady Bears lost their first conference game in a 92-63 defeat to Virginia Union.  The Panthers’ ability to convert on each of Shaw’s 18 turnovers attributed to the margin.  In the battle, VU’s Kiana Johnson scored 43 points and has been named CIAA Player of the Week.

GAMES TO WATCH

Saturday, January 16 - Virginia State at Virginia Union (3:00 p.m.)

Defending CIAA Champions Virginia State University will travel to play No. 21 Virginia Union University on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 3:00 p.m. EST.

Watch for a high-intensity game at Baro-Stevens Hall as the reigning CIAA Champions take on one of the quickest up-and-coming teams of the 2015-16 season.  Both teams are coming off perfect weeks, as Virginia State overtook Winston-Salem State (48-44) and Livingstone (57-49) and VUU outscored its competitors 296-163.  Unfortunately, the Lady Trojans will have to overcome a 1-4 travel record to overturn Virginia Union’s Panthers.  Who will continue their winning streak 4-0?

Panthers Kiana Johnson has earned her second Player of the Week honor and continues to the lead the league in scoring with an average 27.2 points per game.  Virginia State’s Wynterra Pittman is currently performing as the team’s leading scorer (12.7 ppg), and rebounder (9.8/game).

Saturday, January 16 - Johnson C. Smith at Fayetteville State (5:30 p.m.)

Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Felton J. Capel Arena for a battle between the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls and the Fayetteville State Broncos.

The JCSU women will look to continue their winning momentum after defeating Virginia State 70-65 in an overtime battle on January 12, 2016.  The Golden Bulls jumped to an 11-6 record, 4-2 in CIAA play, with the victory.  Fayetteville State may be sitting 3-3 in conference play, but the Lady Broncos have the potential to stun their visiting opponent.  FSU holds a 9-8 overall record while defeating their competitors 6-2 on their home court.  JCSU’s Ashley Porter is consistently scoring double-digits, averaging 10.4 points per game, however FSU’s Bria Robinson tops that with an average 11.9 ppg.  Courtney Best and Doreen Richardson follow closely behind their teammate with 9.8 points per game each.  With FSU sinking 66.8% of their free throws, JCSU will want to limit the Lady Broncos time on the line.
