Trojans Slide Past Mansfield University, 52-51

Mansfield, PA (December 6, 2017) – Virginia State University rolled to an 52-51 victory over Mansfield University tonight at Marion Decker Gymnasium, with senior guard Alexis Smith (Lusby, Md.) posting 24 points, two assists and two steals to lead the way for the Trojans.
Virginia State shot 30.5 percent from the field, 54.2 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Mia Fitts (Richmond, VA) followed Smith as VSU's second-leading scorer with eight points, while guard Dionna Marcus (Fort Stewart, GA) tallied seven points and six total rebounds. Endia McKinney (Norfolk, VA) contributed two points and eight total rebounds. Chrisanna Green finished the contest with six points and six total rebounds.
The Mountaineers set the tone early, fueling a 10-0 MU lead to start the game.  Mansfield controlled the court with a 14-7 lead to close out the first quarter.
In the second stanza, Mansfield built its lead to 16-9 by the 9:12 mark, before the Trojans mounted a comeback and cut the lead to 20-14 with 2:14 to play in the half. The Trojans proceeded to hold MU to four points for the remainder of the half to take an eight point advantage into the break, 24-16.
With 3:23 to go in the third, a Smith three pointer sparked the Trojans to put them up, 28-26, and securing their first lead of the game. MU netted seven points in the final minutes of the quarter, taking the lead 33-30 heading into the final period.
The Trojans continued to rally in the final quarter of the game tying the game twice. Virginia State added 22 points in the final period while holding Mansfield University to 18 to win the game 52-51.

Mansfield University leading scorer was Brielle Kelly who finished the contest with 16 points, six total rebounds, and one steal.
Up Next: Virginia State will host the Builders of the Apprentice School on Monday, December 11. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
