Hawks WBB Falls At Buzzer To #22 Wingate

Murfreesboro, NC – The Chowan Women's Basketball team was unable to complete the upset against nationally ranked Wingate in a New Year's Eve matinee on Sunday falling 72-69 in non-conference action.

Danielle Weldon paced the Hawks with a career-high 19 points in 18 minutes of action.  Weldon went 8-12 from the floor and grabbed seven rebounds.  Jada Lee and Dyhamond Crenshaw posted 15 and 13 points respectively.

Mariah Coker tallied eight points and eight assists on the afternoon.

Turning Point:

With 20 seconds remaining in the contest, Wingate scored the go-ahead layup.  Chowan was unable to get a clean shot off at the buzzer.


First Quarter:

Wingate jumped out to an early 9-5 lead as Dyhamond Crenshaw was the lone scorer for the Hawks.  Mariah Coker drained a trey before Dhyamond Crenshaw converted down-low to give the Hawks their first lead of the contest at 10-9 midway through the opening frame.

The Bulldogs would distance themselves, 23-15, with a 14-5 run to end the quarter as the Hawks tallied one field goal in the final 5:20.

Second Quarter:

Both teams would trade baskets the opening portion of the quarter as Chantel Roberts knocked down a three to get the Hawks moving.  Mariah Coker hit a jumper and a trey to trim the deficit to six, 29-23.

Following a Bulldog basket, Chowan went on an 8-3 run sparked by a Jada Lee jumper to pull the Hawks to within three, 34-31 with two minutes remaining in the half.  Joanne Williams tallied two buckets during the run.

Wingate widened the deficit to 40-33 before the break with a 6-2 run to close the half.

Third Quarter:

Out of the locker room, Wingate pushed their advantage to double-figures, 45-33, with five quick points.  Jada Leeand Danielle Weldon brought the Hawks back to within two, 45-43, with a 10-0 run.  Jada Lee started the run with a jumper and a pair from the stripe as Danielle Weldon knocked down three straight from the elbow.

Danielle Weldon kept the Hawks in the contest with six more points.  Wingate took a 55-51 lead into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter:

Back-to-back jumpers by Jordan Pettaway and Dhyamond Crenshaw trimmed the Bulldogs' advantage back to two, 57-55, before a triple widened the gap for the Bulldogs.

The Hawks would keep pace with the Bulldogs keeping the deficit at a minimum down the stretch.  Chowan used a mini 6-0 run to take the lead, 65-64, with 2:38 remaining as Jada Lee knocked down a three from the wing.

The lead would flip hands following a pair of free throws and buckets by both teams.  Danielle Weldon gave the Hawks a slight advantage with 25 ticks on the clock with a jumper.

Wingate answered with a bucket on their next possession.  The Hawks would try to hold for the last shot but the Bulldog defense forced a turnover.  The Bulldogs converted from the stripe with 0.6 seconds left.

Chantel Roberts was unable to get off a clean shot from behind the arc as time expired.


Chowan will start 2018 at home against defending CIAA Champion, Johnson C. Smith, on January 4.  Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
