JCSU Women Cruises to 92-58 Win Over West Virginia Wesleyan

Charlotte, NC (Dec. 31, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University women's basketball team had five players score in double figures and broke open a close game in the second quarter to take a convincing win over visiting West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at Brayboy Gym.

After leading by just three (16-13) after the end of the first quarter, the Golden Bulls erupted for 29 second quarter points and never looked back.

The Golden Bulls went on an early 12-2 run over the first 2:39 of the second quarter to lead 27-15 after Kendall Adams (Opelika, AL) dropped in a layup.

West Virginia Wesleyan closed the gap to four points (30-26) following a pair of free throws, but JCSU again put together a run, this time a 13-2 spurt that extended the lead to 43-28 with 49 seconds before halftime.  After a Bobcat basket made it 43-30, JCSU got two free throws from Jasmine Carter (Dacula, GA) to take the 45-30 lead into the break.

In the third quarter, the Golden Bulls started hot again, jumping up to as many as 28 points
(64-36) with 2:35 left to play in the stanza.

West Virginia Wesleyan would get no closer than 21 points the rest of the way, with JCSU steadily building their lead and eventually taking the 34-point, 92-56 win.

As a team, JCSU shot 47.9% from the field on a 34-of-71 effort. JCSU also hit six three pointers and went 18-of-20 (90%) from the free throw line.

Sophomore Malia Rivers (Pageland, SC) led all JCSU scorers with 16 points, going 6-of-16 from the field while knocking down three from distance.  Carter added 14 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line while senior Kendall Adams had 12 points and nine rebounds.  Freshman La'Zarea Bowens (Knightdale, NC) had 11 points and eight rebounds while Xana Dove (West Palm Beach, FL) just missed a double-double, scoring 10 points and hauling in nine rebounds.

The win improves JCSU to 10-4 on the season.
