Women's Hoops Returns Home to Open New Year Against Barton

Raleigh, NC  The Shaw University women's basketball team returns home after a three-game road swing in Florida when the Lady Bears celebrate the New Year by hosting Barton College on Tuesday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in the historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Lady Bears (3-9) will look to snap a three-game skid against the Bulldogs (6-5). In 12 games played this season, Shaw has averaged 65.9 points while shooting just 37-percent from the floor. From long distance, the Lady Bears are responsible for 27-percent shooting and 70-percent from the free-throw line. 

Senior LaQuisha Taylor (Charlotte, NC) anchors the offensive attack for Shaw, averaging 20.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per outing while sophomore Lervencia Johnson-Tyler (Many, LA) puts up 12.5 points and a team-high 8.0 rebounds. Senior KlinTisha Martin (Atlanta, GA) rounds out the double figure scoring for the Lady Bears, posting 11.7 points and 6.5 boards. 

As for Barton, the Bulldogs head to Spaulding after earning a 66-48 win over Fayetteville State on Dec. 30.  Kianna Wynn led the efforts with 21 points while Shanika Peterkin grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. 

Barton enters Tuesday's game, averaging 67.5 points and 40.1 rebounds. The Bulldogs are shooting 36-percent from the field, including 28-percent from the 3-point line and 66-percent at the charity stripe. Wynn is the leading scorer on the team, posting 23.5 points a night. Alex Kimble adds 17.8 points, while Dinah Neal and Karimah Dean contribute 13.9 and 11.0 points, respectively. 

The last time these two programs met was on Dec. 11, 2007 where the Lady Bears dropped 64-48 on the road. 

Following Tuesday's clash, Shaw will pick up conference play again on Thursday, Jan. 4 when the Lady Bears begin its five-game road swing and conference cross-division action at Virginia Union University. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
