April 19, 2006
PETERSBURG, VA – At the conclusion of day 1, and the completion of the doubles contests, the Shaw University Lady Bears hold the slimmest of leads over the Fayetteville State University Lady Broncos in women’s doubles action from the 2006 CIAA Women’s Tennis Championships from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.
The Lady Bears and Lady Broncos met in all three championship matches at the first, second and third doubles flights with Shaw University taking two of three doubles titles from Fayetteville State.
At first doubles, the Lady Bears’ team of Fletcher/Thompson defeated Fayetteville State’s Nieves/Artis 8-5 to earn the Lady Bears eight team points.
At second doubles, the Lady Broncos exacted revenge and pulled the team scoring even with eight points of their own as the team of Lee/Watson proved they were worthy of their top seed as they cruised to an 8-1 win over Shaw’s Hall/Lawson.
Third doubles would again swing back to the Lady Bears as second-seeded Enebechi/Oyelade of Shaw defeated FSU’s Bennett/Johnson 8-2.
Three different institutions won third place matches as Johnson C. Smith, North Carolina Central and Virginia Union all earned bronze medal finishes once on the afternoon.
After the first day of competition, the Lady Bears have earned 23 points with Fayetteville State close behind with 22. The home-team Lady Trojans have amassed 13 points and Virginia Union rounds out the top four finishers with 11 points.
