Winston-Salem State falls in women's tennis regional semifinal

VALENCIA, Pa. – Ranvita Mahto and Emilia Osborne each recorded wins in their singles and doubles matches Sunday to lead second-seeded Indiana University of Pennsylvania to a 5-0 win over seventh-seeded Winston-Salem State University in semifinal action of the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis Championships played on the indoor courts at the Lakevue Racquet Club.

Mahto and No. 2 doubles partner Kelly McBryan won a hard-fought 8-6 decision in the No. 2 doubles match. Mahto then won her No. 4 singles match by 6-0, 6-2 scores.

Osborne and No. 3 doubles partner Alex Ballard won an 8-2 decision before Osborne reigned by 6-1, 6-3 scores in the No. 3 singles match.

With the win, the Crimson Hawks (20-6), runners-up in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition this spring, moved into Monday’s regional final. IUP will meet either third-seeded and tournament host Slippery Rock University or sixth-seeded West Virginia State University in a 5 p.m. indoor match to determine which team advances to the national Round of 16 May 11-14 in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Slippery Rock and West Virginia State played in the second semifinal match Sunday.

Winston-Salem State, the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champion, ended its season with an impressive 27-2 record.

The semifinal and final matches were moved indoors as a result of rain showers that moved into western Pennsylvania Sunday morning.
