CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Shaw women's tennis team closed out its season with a loss to the eighth-ranked team in the nation, California (PA) in the NCAA Regional Finals played at Roadman Park on the California campus.
One day after their first NCAA Tournament win in program history, the Lady Bears faced a buzzsaw in the form of the Vulcans, who now advance to the NCAA National Tournament to be played in Louisville, Ky. on May 16-19.
The number three doubles team of Claudia Silva and Gislaine Farias forced Jolien Borrenberghs and Jade Pondicas to a tiebreaker, but lost 9-8 (7-5).
Having swept the doubles, California needed only two wins in singles to win the best-of-nine match. Number one singles Lolia Kienka dropped her match with #12 in the nation Martina Rubesova 6-1, 6-1, and Ramona Czakon, in the Vulcans' number five slot, defeated Aline Ferreira 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the win.
At the time of the win, Jessica Medina had won her first set at the number two slot, 7-5, and Claudia Silva had taken the first set from the #42 player in the country, Jade Pondicas 6-4 and was tied 1-1 in the second set.
With the loss, the Lady Bears conclude their season with a 26-2 mark. They were the fourth-seeded team in the region, while California was first.
