JCSU Volleyball To Begin Practice, Tabbed Sixth in Southern Division

Charlotte, NC (Aug. 10, 2017) – The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team will begin preparations for the 2017 season on Sunday, Aug. 13 as the team will hold its first practice of the season.

The Golden Bulls, picked to finish sixth in the Southern Division and tabbed ninth in the CIAA Preseason rankings, return eight players from 2016 including junior Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, TX), who led JCSU with 165 kills. Smoots also recorded a .132 hitting percentage. Senior Makayla Adams (Michigan City, IN.), returns after leading JCSU with a .156 percentage while knocking down 108 kills. Adams also managed a team-best 60 blocks in 2016.

Also returning is senior Amirah Burnett (Baltimore, MD).  Burnett finished with 44 blocks in her junior season and also contributed 66 kills.  Maya Washington (West Columbia, SC) also returns to the JCSU lineup after notching 128 kills last season to go along with 28 blocks.

Defensively, Georgina Diaz (Lincolnton, NC) will enter her sophomore campaign wearing the Gold and Blue after leading the team with 244 digs (3.21 per set) in her initial season in 2016.

Head coach Mark Raley, entering his fifth season at the helm of the program is anxious to begin the season. “We have some talented ladies returning,” he said. “The addition of some highly-touted newcomers will definitely help us improve.”

The Golden Bulls will begin the 2017 season with a home tilt with Benedict on Friday, Sept. 8 at 6:00 p.m.
