Charlotte, N.C. (Sept. 12, 2017)
– The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team opened the 2017 season by taking a 3-2 (22-25, 25-7, 22-25, 25-20, 15-10) win over visiting Johnson & Wales University at Brayboy Gym on Tuesday night.

The Golden Bulls had three players record 10 kills on the night.  Senior Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.), junior Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) and freshman Karina Pressoir (Orlando, Fla.) each paced JCSU.  Adams finished with a .286 hitting percentage while Pressoir notched a .250 percentage in her initial outing with the Gold and Blue.

After dropping a hard-fought first set, the Golden Bulls dominated the second, hitting for a .600 percentage while delivering nine kills as a team.  JWU took the third set by a 25-22 count, but JCSU came alive again in the fourth, posting a 20-15 win.

In the final set, the two teams battled to an 8-8 tie but JCSU went on a 4-0 run to claim the 12-8 lead.  In that span, Pressoir had two kills and Maya Washington (West Columbia, S.C.) recorded one.

After JWU closed to within 12-10, JCSU put the match away, scoring three straight points, all on JWU errors.

The win marks the second consecutive season that JCSU has won their opener. JWU falls to 4-6 with the loss.

In addition to the stellar offensive numbers, JCSU got 22 digs from Georgina Diaz (Lincolnton, N.C.) and a team-high four blocks from Adams.  Azha McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) also had a stellar outing, leading JCSU with 28 assists while adding nine digs.

The Golden Bulls will be in action this upcoming weekend, traveling to Bowie, Md. to take part in the first CIAA Roundup of the season.
