Lincoln University, PA- The Lincoln University women's volleyball team honored their senior players Monday night as they played their final home match of the season, falling to Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) North Division rival Virginia State University 3-0
The Lions fall to 4-18 overall and 2-13 in CIAA matches. Virginia State improves to 9-11 overall and 9-5 in CIAA contests.
Prior to the start of the match, the team honored two seniors. The first was Taylor Murphy who joined the team as a walk-on and while not appearing in a match this season has been part of the program as a practice player from the start of the season. The second was senior Mariah Russell (St Louis MO/Maplewood Richmond Heights). Russell, playing in her 81st match as a Lion, has started in every contest this season. She became the Lions all-time kills leader against Livingstone College on October 1 and recently recorded her 500th career dig and 100th career service ace. Career-wise she is Lincoln's all-time leader in kills and attacks.
Back to the game, the Lions dropped a hard-fought 25-21 decision in the opening set and then struggled in the remaining two sets, losing 25-15 and 25-11.
Russell led the team with seven kills while Aubury Coleman (Mason City, IA/ Mason City) added five. Alisa Foster(Philadelphia, PA/Science Leadership Acad.) had 15 assists and Kaylarose Scott (Orange, NJ/Hudson Catholic) led the team with two aces. On the defensive side Tymera Crudup (Barnegat, NJ/Barnegat) had 16 digs.
The Spartans were led by Hailey Heyward's nine kills. Myia Jones and Jailyn Ivey added eight kills apiece. Kennedi Cannon, Tiara Ramey and Jasmine Jones recorded 18, 11 and 10 digs respectively. Heyward and Ivey each had two blocks.
Lincoln returns to action on Monday, November 6, 2017 with a non-conference match at Philadelphia University before closing out the regular season at Bowie State University on November 9, 2017.
