WSSU's Jeptolo and Livingstone's Shade capture regional cross country titles

Winston-Salem State University freshman Irene Jeptolo and Livingstone College sophomore Darius Shade won the Division II Women’s and Men's Individual Cross Country Southeast Regionals on Saturday afternoon in Wingate, NC. With their first place finishes, both qualify for the NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships in Pomona, CA on November 19, 2005.

Jeptolo, a freshman from Kapsabet, Kenya (St. Joseph’s Girls School) completed the 6k (3.72 miles) course in a time of 23:25, six seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. She was runner-up at the CIAA Women's Cross Country Championships and will be the only female runner to represent the CIAA at the national championships.
Shade, this year's CIAA individual cross country champion, set a Wingate University cross country facility record en route to a victory in the men’s 10K race. He ran a 32:14, skimming four seconds off the old record held by Larry Marshall of St. Augustine’s College (32:18).
Last season, Shade finished as CIAA and SE Region Runner-up. With a time six seconds better than last year, he improved to become regional champion becoming he first student-athlete from Livingstone to ever win a CIAA cross country individual and a Southeast Region Championship.
Mars Hill College won both the men's and women's team regional titles.
