Jeptolo, a freshman at WSSU, earned a second place finish at the
2005 CIAA women’s cross country championships, earned a 2005
Division II Southeast Regional women’s cross country
championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II national
championship in Pomona, CA.
Jeptolo, in her first year of competition at WSSU, used her NCAA
Championship berth to record a WSSU all-time best 59th place
national finish as she capped the most successful women’s
cross country season in the history of Winston-Salem State
University.
For her stellar performance over the 2005 season, the United States
Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association selected
Jeptolo as the recipient of the 2005 NCAA Division II Women’s
Southeast Region Athlete of the Year.
“We are extremely happy for Irene. To accomplish what she did
in only her first year of competition here at WSSU is truly
amazing, and to do it in our first year of having a true cross
country team is a testament to the quality that she and head coach
Benny Morgan have made a part of our program. She represented
herself, the institution, and her team very well. We wish her much
success in the future and hope that this is the beginning of a
stellar career for her here at WSSU and we know that this is not
only the beginning of the successes that are to come for our cross
country program but that it will set the standard which our cross
country and track and field programs will continue to
follow.”
